One island, one robot
The States of Guernsey may cover less than 25 square miles, but when it comes to maintaining its lush green spaces and sports facilities, the ambition is massive. In February 2023, the States Works Propagation Unit took a leap into the future of turf management by purchasing the TinyLineMarker Pro X. This move has effectively placed the entire territory’s line-marking needs in the hands—or rather, the wheels—of a single GPS-automated robot, making Guernsey one of our most unique "sovereign" customers.
Efficiency across the island
Richard Langmead, Manager of the Land Management section at States Works, oversees a diverse portfolio. His team is responsible for the grounds maintenance of school fields, public parks, social housing, and even the island’s iconic cliff paths. Historically, this work was a manual, labour-intensive process that struggled to keep pace with modern demands.
“My team used to mark out by hand using a manual line marking machine but this is time-consuming,” Langmead noted. As the island's requirements for high-quality sports surfaces grew, the need for a faster, more reliable solution became clear. The transition to the Pro X was driven by a need to keep pace with an increasing workload while maintaining the surgical precision required for professional sports pitches.
The impact was immediate. By moving away from manual strings and tape measures, the team has been able to reclaim valuable man-hours. "It means the team can carry out other jobs nearby while the robot does its work," Langmead explained, highlighting how the robot acts as a force multiplier for his crew.
Smart tools for seamless operation
One of the standout features for the Guernsey team has been the Multi-Select Tool. This software allows the operator to queue up multiple pitches to be marked out in a specific order of their choosing. Once the sequence is set, the Pro X moves from one area to the next without requiring constant recalibration or manual intervention, providing what Langmead describes as a “noticeable time saving”.
To ensure the process is foolproof, the robot displays its intended route on a handheld tablet. This allows the team to clear any obstructions before the robot begins, ensuring a seamless workflow. The system even provides estimated completion times and driving distances, giving the Land Management team total transparency over their daily schedule.

“I decided to purchase the TinyLineMarker Pro X robot for many reasons but mainly due to the efficiency the robot will give us"
Complementing this autonomy is the Low Paint Alert system. When the Pro X senses it is running low on supplies—or if it encounters a blockage—it sends an instant notification to the user’s tablet. This prevents the robot from ‘ghost-marking’ and ensures that every line is as crisp as the first, making it an incredibly useful feature for marking multiple pitches in succession.
A new standard for Guernsey sports
While the primary mission is to service education sites and government land, the arrival of the TinyLineMarker Pro X has opened new doors for the local community. States Works is now offering its high-tech marking services to private sports clubs and organisations across the entire island.
With over 200 built-in templates—ranging from standard athletic tracks to intricate custom emblems and parking layouts—the Pro X provides a level of versatility that was previously impossible with manual marking. For the athletes of Guernsey, this means more accurate pitches and faster turnaround times, ensuring the island’s vibrant sports culture continues to thrive with professional-grade precision.
